Bienvenidos a Chile.
After my last visit (Raphael) 8 years ago for Alex's wedding, when I said then I would be back next year, the Corbeaux gang finally met up again in Chile although the Draz were missing unfortunately. As expected, Alex got a bit more voluminous as a father of 2 little girls and the rest of the Rogers family were grown up including even Juan! Once again in this fabulous trip, I was able to link up with old friends which is one of the best things about it.

Santiago, also brought us back an old acquaintance of ours: our package from India which was initially sent to Liem in Singapore, then considered lost somewhere in a warehouse, came back from the dead in New Dehli and sent by Carolina to Chili (gracies Carol por echarnos una mano). 6 months after sending it, we had no clue what was in there any longer!

Alex had drawn up a great plan for us with a short 4 days trip up North before heading to Patagonia. With our gear set and the bags in the car, we were ready to hit the road.

The highlight of our Northern escape was without any doubt the Genimi Observatory. With Alex's uncle working there, we got the unique chance of a personal tour with one of the engineers. We learnt that there are 2 such observatories with 8m diameter mirrors made of one single piece and working on infrared light which provides a larger scale of research. It took them more than 2 days and a half to bring it through the Elqui desert up the mountain and they even had to cut down the lamp posts in the town they passed by to avoid damaging the mirror. After the 2h tour, I was offered a job (Raphael) by the engineer thanks to my wise questions and nagging questions :-)

We slept in a lovely place deep into a valley a few km away from the Argentine border, with our room being an igloo! I also (Berta) tried some Chilenian cures... gracias Vero!

Next day, we went to La Serena airport stopping by the dam and Alex then revealed us that we would sleep at Santiago's airport from midnight to 6am as we had to change plane… surprise!!! Fortunately for us and probably for him, he managed to sneak all of us into the VIP lounge so we could at least have a quiet and well facilitated place to "sleep" until our plane departure for Punta Arenas, Patagonia.
